Racine Child and Family Counseling

How to help children with Down syndrome and their families
Racine Unified moves to a new, consistent career counseling model

Some patients

The best place to take care of children with Down's syndrome is the family rather than the sanatorium. Studies have pointed out that patients with Down's syndrome who grew up in a nursing home, family upbringing than IQ in patients with large difference. While accommodating these kids grow up living in one place is not a nursing home, but every place of community, it ought to be accepted by each community and provide jobs. Down's syndrome is usually calm and easy going personality, thinking stubborn and simple, to make simple and repetitive work. Older, when the advance of Alzheimer's disease comes, you need to have nursing homes to accommodate.

Some parents

Down syndrome families after being told the disease will experience a dark spiritual path, timely genetic counseling, psychological counseling and medical care, rehabilitation and social groups persistence is needed to help. Usually the father, the mother's reaction will be from the denial, anger, blame, and will gradually accept the fact, to take positive action, on the other hand, the newborn with Down's syndrome complicated by congenital disease severity, parents often face either let the child receives treatment, even in the face of this child's choice not to, because it means that the child's birth parents will be faced with a major change in the structure of family life, a significant economic burden and child after an unknown fate. Some parents will take give-up attitude. In 1982 to 1985 between the United States had for two newborns with Down syndrome and congenital malformations caused by administrative, judicial, legislative and the American Academy of Pediatrics dispute between, this is the famous "Baby Doe" bill. Birth to this dispute lies in knowing that there will be retarded, and there are congenital malformations require surgery child, my parents do not let children or without the right treatment, the conclusion is focused only on the three cases you can not treat:

  1. Child is in a long-term and not return full coma
  2. The treatment itself is only a short delay the coming of death
  3. The treatment itself is no benefit and is inhumane, in terms of the spirit of the bill doctors and parents have the right to give up the child, so the medical work should be by a physician, psychologist, physical therapist, counselors and social workers team of to help them face these things.

Opportunity to provide a variety of consulting is very important, parents need only simple initial facts and moral support when families began to seek medical assistance when faced with reality, a detailed consultation in order to play the effect.

Actively join support groups

If sharing parents room parenting experience more to enhance awareness for this disease. This will be the Down syndrome families and community enthusiasts formed social groups, in order to play the spirit of self-help people to help promote the education experience for the establishment of communication purpose. Many had just given birth to a child with Down's syndrome families go through and have the same experience after contact parents learned that they are not the most unfortunate family, and parenting experience through mutual communication, so that children get good care. As with all families spontaneous participation, so get referrals from the medical community as well as support.

Marriage and family therapy

I will be moving to california from DC, so i'm not exactly sure which geographical area. i am making sure that whatever program i do leads to certification, etc.
it's important to me that the degree is in counseling psychology, not just counseling or marriage and family therapy. the counseling psych degree is more viable for further study (ph.d., etc). USC is the other school I'm looking at. not a lot of places have counseling psychology, but SCU does, hence the interest.

  • Avatar Ashley L What careers are out there that work with autistic and down syndrome children?
    May 19, 2009 by Ashley L | Posted in Other - Careers & Employment

I am a junior in college and my major is Special Education. I want to teach special education, but I was thinking about continuing my education and getting a masters in Psychology. My dream job would be working with autistic or down syndrome children in the hospital atmosphere. Do you know of any other careers other than Special Education? Thanks =)

    • Still within special education is "gifted" teacher. In my experience many of the "gifted" children have a form of autism called Asperger Syndrome, which is what makes them "gifted" in certai …own syndrome and autism. It would probably be good for you to apply as a camp counselor and work at one of these for the summer to be sure this is the right path for you. Plus it would give you experience for the resume.

  • Avatar ebennett54 How important is proper death notification to a family of a loved one important to that family's grieving?
    Feb 04, 2007 by ebennett54 | Posted in Law & Ethics

I am seeking a response from a trained grief therapist. My family found out about the murders of our daughter and two grandchildren when an attorney blurted it out in court. The murderer (the attorney's client) was on tr …elf. It was as if we were devastated twice. We have yet to receive an apology from the attorney. I believe the callous way in which the news was delivered is hampering our healing. Am I right? It's been 8 months now....

    • Try rewriting this question in the Psychology section, where you might have better luck finding someone qualified to discuss this horrible ordeal.

Such a callous and cold man....but he's an attorney.
…hs is a long time to feel the way you've been feeling, so take action.... you have been sitting in this pain for too long.
It's time to move on. That's what your daughter would have wanted, right?

    • It sounds like you are waiting for an apology so you can move on through the grieving process. Yes it was wrong in which the details of your family were given but don't wait for an apology. It is likely that you won't ge … way? No one can know what you are going through as every case like this is different. Grieve for them but also remember the good times and live for them instead of without them. They are with you in your heart and soul.

  • Avatar Who wants to know How can I improve my Application for a camp councillor for a camp with a literacy focus?
Dec 01, 2010 by Who wants to know | Posted in Teaching

Some details about me that are relevant:
    - I haven't been to camp before nor have I had a councilling job at a camp
    - I have done local volunteering with reading and education in school and in parks with kids …riends and family informally as well
    - I read a lot and love to read.

So what else can i do to improve my chances of being hired? I really would love the job but I don't have any "camp" experiences .

    • Show that you're enthusiastic. Camps don't want lame and boring people regardless how much experience you have with children or tutoring or within the education field. Working at camp is one of the first jobs that many s … a common mistake that people make, but I would make sure to edit whatever resumes/cover letters/applications you submit. You certainly don't want them to think you're applying for camp council.

      Good luck.

I am currently a Junior in college with a Psychology major and Child and Family Studies minor. I want to go to grad school and become a Marriage and Family Therapist with the ultimate goal of my own private practice. Thi …I worked at a summer camp as a counselor, but I wasn't sure if I should do that again or if there's some other path that will be better for my resume and put me in the right direction with the career path I'm aiming for.

    • Ask around your school for internship opportunities. The opportunities are out there, you just need to want it bad enough. Also, your connections are very important. Become best of buddies with your professors. They must surely have connections in the field that they can pass on to you.
